Cold Process Soap Making

Next Page>>

Cold process soap making is a traditional soap making method that involves mixing oils and butters with lye (sodium hydroxide) to create a chemical reaction that produces soap. The process is called "cold" because no external heat is applied to the mixture during the soap making process.

Here are the basic steps involved in cold process soap making:

1. Measure and melt the oils and butters: Choose a combination of oils and butters that will create the desired texture and moisturizing properties for the soap. Weigh the oils and butters and melt them in a pot or double boiler over low heat.

2.   Measure the lye and water: Weigh the lye and water separately, and then mix the lye into the water. This creates a chemical reaction that generates heat and fumes, so it is important to work in a well-ventilated area and wear protective gear.

3.    Mix the lye solution and oils: Once the lye solution and oils have cooled to around 100-110°F (38-43°C), slowly pour the lye solution into the oils and mix them together using a stick blender until they reach "trace". Trace is the point where the mixture thickens and starts to resemble a custard.

4.    Add fragrance and color: At this point, you can add fragrance oils, essential oils, and colorants to the mixture to create a customized soap. Be sure to use skin-safe ingredients and follow the recommended usage rates.

5.    Pour the mixture into molds: Pour the soap mixture into molds and tap them gently to remove any air bubbles. Cover the molds with a towel or cardboard and let them sit for 24-48 hours to allow the soap to harden.

6.    Cut and cure the soap: Once the soap has hardened, remove it from the molds and cut it into bars. Place the bars on a rack or tray and let them cure for 4-6 weeks. This allows the excess water to evaporate and the soap to harden, creating a longer-lasting and more stable product.
Cold process soap making can be a rewarding and creative hobby, but it requires careful measurement, safety precautions, and attention to detail to ensure a successful outcome.
